Which event is the world’s largest gathering of athletes competing at the same time in a single location? If you said the Olympic Games, you’d be wrong. It is the Arnold Classic Sports Festival held every year in Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A. on the first weekend in March. From March 1 to 3, 2013, over 18,000 amateur and professional athletes (compared to 10,800 who competed in the London Olympics) will converge on Columbus to compete for over half a million U.S. dollars in prize money, in the 25th anniversary edition of the event. Competitions will include strongman, powerlifting, arm wrestling, boxing, martial arts, gymnastics, archery, fitness, aerobics, and a host of other disciplines. This year, for the first time, it will include Scottish Highland Games events, with things like the caber toss and the stone put. It will be interesting to see if all competitors in the Highland events will be required to wear kilts.

The crowning event, and the one most associated with the Arnold Classic, is the Professional Men’s Bodybuilding contest, with a first prize of $130,000 USD (98,600 EUR).  The 2013 version will be significant because the winner for the last two years, Branch “Quadrasaurus” Warren has indicated he will not defend his title in 2013. Several other high profile IFBB pros have also indicated their intention not to compete, including Kai Greene, Evan Centopani, Victor Martinez, and Shawn “Flexatron” Rhoden (the 2012 Arnold Classic Europe winner). This means the field is wide open for a new champion of The Arnold Classic. Will this finally be Dennis Wolf’s year to nail a major IFBB title? Will Dexter Jackson try to reclaim the title he has won 3 times? Will this be the year for up-and-coming Canadian star Ben Pakulski to solidify his position among the top echelon of IFBB stars? We won’t have long to wait to find out, as the contest is only 9 weeks away!
